What I Witnessed:

The mute assassin tried to take out the Doctor but was no match for his Gallifreyan martial arts!  WIth the assassin defeated, the Doctor quickly concluded that the centurion who helped them must have been behind it.

Meanwhile, Ian ended up on a slave ship rowing with the rest of the slaves.  He tried to pull a fast one on the slave driver but his ruse failed.  Force to row again, the ship entered a terrible storm that tore the ship apart!

Back on shore, Barbara found herself on the auction block where a man who was ogling her earlier bid 10,000 for her.  He told her that he saw her being kind and considerate and wanted to help her.  She’ll still have to be a slave for Nero but thems the breaks.

Ian ended up washing onto shore.  He and another slave used a rock to break their chains after which they made their way to Rome and got promptly recaptured and told that he was going to fight in the arena!

The Doctor and Vicki got to meet Nero.  The emperor wanted the Doctor to play his lyre for him but the Doctor was able to use flattery and subterfuge to get out of it.  After Nero left, they discovered the centurion who had tried to have the killed, dead!

What I Overheard:

The Doctor: You know I am so constantly outwitting the opposition, I tend to forget the delights and satisfaction of the gentle art of fisticuffs.

Vicki: I realized you were a man of many talents but I did not know that fighting was one of them.

The Doctor: My dear, I am one of the best!  Did you know it was I that used to teach the mountain mollah of Montana?

Vicki: *laughs*

Written by: Dennis Spooner
Doctor: The First Doctor (William Hartnell)
Companions: Ian Chesterton (William Russell), Barbara Wright (Jacqueline Hill), Vicki (Maureen O’Brien)

What I Witnessed:

The TARDIS landed on the edge of a cliff where it quickly tumbled down the cliffside.

Suddenly, it’s nearly a month later and we see the Doctor and companions in a villa back in the height of ancient Rome where they are living it up!

While they lounged about, the Doctor decided that he was going to go to Rome.  When Vicki begged to join him he agreed but he felt insulted when Barbara and Ian asked thinking them thought he was defenseless.

So Barbara and Ian stayed behind and continued to drink wine and lounge back in the villa where they were ambushed by slave traders who captured and added them to their chattel.  Not soon after being captured, Ian was purchased and separated from Barbara.

On the road to Rome, the Doctor and Vicki stumbled onto a bard who had been slain by a bandit.  When the Doctor picked up the bard’s lyre, a Roman guard mistook him for the bard, Maximus Pettulian.  The guard insisted he take the “bard” back with him to emperor Nero.

At the nearby Inn, the guard met with the mute bandit who killed the bard and revealed that it was he who commanded the bandit to do it.  Thinking that the bandit failed and the the Doctor was the bard, the guard commanded him to kill the Doctor!

Episode: Desperate Measures (The Rescue - Part 2 of 2)

Running time: 25 minutes
Original Airdate: Jan. 9th, 1965
Written by: David Whitaker
Doctor: The First Doctor (William Hartnell)
Companions: Ian Chesterton (William Russell), Barbara Wright (Jacqueline Hill)

What I Witnessed:

When Barbara saw Vicki go near a sand monster, she quickly grabbed a gun and blasted it.  Sadly, Vicki was apparently in no danger and was actually going to to feed the beast.

The Doctor and Ian narrowly escaped the death trap and found there way outside and to the spaceship and tried to tell Vicki that they could take care of Koquillion but she insisted that they leave.  the Doctor took Vicki aside and talked some sense into her.  He then tried to go talk to Bennett but he had barricaded himself in the back of the spaceship.  When the Doctor finally broke in, he found that Bennett wasn’t there but instead found tape recordings of Bennett that made it sound like he was there and a secret hatch.

The Doctor went down the hatch and following the tunnels to find that it was Bennett who was pretending to be Koquillion.  He had wiped out the native race and was pretending to be Koquillion to scare Vicki so that she would believe Koquillion was responsible for killing the natives.

In the end, two surviving natives suddenly appeared and ran Bennett off a cliff.  The Doctor and Vicki made it back to the TARDIS where the Doctor offered Vicki an invitation to join them in the TARDIS.

Episode: The Powerful Enemy (The Rescue - Part 1 of 2)
Series: Season 2 (S02E11P1)
Running time: 25 minutes
Original Airdate: Jan. 2nd, 1965
Written by: David Whitaker
Doctor: The First Doctor (William Hartnell)
Companions: Ian Chesterton (William Russell), Barbara Wright (Jacqueline Hill)

What I Witnessed:

The Doctor slept through the TARDIS landing on a new planet.  Barbara and Ian woke him up and they all stepped outside and into cave. The Doctor told Barbara and Ian to go explore while he went back into the TARDIS to take a nap.  When the stepped outside of the cave, they noticed a nearby space ship crash landed.

While discussing if they should tell the Doctor, Ian and Barbara were approached by a clawed alien.  the alien told them to go get the Doctor so that he can talk to him.  when Ian went back into the cave, the alien pushed Susan off the cliff and sealed the cave entrance with a strange staff.

Back in the cave, the Doctor told Ian that they were on Dido.  Ian claimed the alien that caused this must have done something to Barbara but the Doctor claimed the native Koquillion were peaceful.

Meanwhile, Barbara was rescued by Vicki and taken back to their crashed space ship where she discovered Bennett and Vicki were being viciously harassed by the alien Koquillion.

With the cave entrance blocked, the Doctor and Ian explore the cave tunnels and traverse a dangerous cliff side edge.  Below a nasty looking monster looks up as if waiting for a snack to fall.  Once they were past the clive edge, Ian pulled on a handle that triggered a death trap!  Spikes cut him off from the Doctor and threatened to push him down into the waiting monster below!
